Stickman Brewery talks to us ahead of the Stellenbosch Craft Beer Festival
With the annual Stellenbosch Craft Beer Festival around the corner, I thought it would be a good idea to get to know some of the brewers.
I asked the owner of Stickman Brewery a few questions about their beers, what you can expect at the festival, and a little advice for the home brewers.
MT: How long have you been brewing?
SB: We started building our brewery in Oct. 2014 and went into production in June 2015.
MT: Any type of formal training in brewing science or art? If not, how did you learn the craft?
SB: No, I was a home brewer for many years before I decided to make my hobby my full-time job.
MT: What are your favourite styles? Do you get to work on them at your current brewery?
SB: I personally prefer all types of lagers. Yes, I do work on them.
MT: Have you ever had a bad batch? If so, how long did it take you to figure out what caused it?
SB: Yes, only one. We knew immediately it was an infection.
MT: Can you give a hint if anything might be coming from your brewery specifically for the festival?
SB: We will be launching a new beer soon and we will have it at the festival.
MT: What’s the weirdest ingredient you have ever put in beer?
SB: Jalapeno and cucumber
MT: If you had to pick a favorite beer from the brewery and offer it to a stranger, which one would it be and why?
SB: Our G-Man Amber Ale. It has been my baby since my home brewer days.
MT: If you could sit down with anyone (living or dead) and have a beer, who would it be and why? What would be the first question you would ask them?
SB: Sam Calagione. His creativity and business sense has always fascinated me. I would ask how to go from small too big.
MT: If you were omnipotent, what would you change (first) to improve our beer universe?
SB: Remove the monopoly to give people more choice by allowing small breweries to compete in the marketplace.
MT: Any advice for those aspiring (kitchen/homebrew) future pro brewers out there?
SB: Making beer is the easy part; selling beer is the hard part! Make sure you budget just as much to launch your brand as have budgeted to build your brewery. And make sure you have lots of money…
We’re really looking forward to tasting their delicious brews at the festival, and in case you missed it…
